We were surprised by how quickly the busy Auckland freeways turned into four-lane highways then two-lane roads. One thing about New Zealand...it's takes a LONG time to get anywhere, but being on less-busy roads allows you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings even more. By day two, we were quickly realizing that nearly everywhere you look is scenic. It's truly a stunning country.
The van that we had rented was enormous, and very tall. It held all of our belongings nicely, though, so we were grateful to not have to rent an extra trailer. Steve was relieved to get out of the city with that thing, as it was stressful to maneuver through the traffic, not to mention getting used to driving on the left side! That was an adjustment for all of us. More than once I had to call out, "Left! Left!"
We had really been looking forward to visiting Hamilton, where the only LDS temple in New Zealand is located. It was a glorious day, but I was heavy-hearted and missing Emily. I hoped that visiting the temple would bring me comfort (it did).
The temple is located in a small suburb of Hamilton called Temple View. I'm not even sure if that's the official name, but that's what the locals call it. We met some sister missionaries in the visitor center, and spent quite awhile walking along the grounds. I cried when we saw a family outside the temple who had just been sealed...so happy for them, but wanting my own family to be together, too. Ahhh! Tender feelings. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.
Luke and Landon enjoyed running around on the grounds in front of the temple. In the background you can see our big white van.
There's nothing like the peace that comes from the temple. We can't wait to visit Temple View again.

The suburb is actually called Temple View - and would you believe right up until the Sydney Temple was built in 1984 - all Australian members had to come here for their endowments - what a long way! You all look a little refreshed! And if I may say so - "winter" - looks really warm for July!
ReplyDeleteWe heard that about the Australian members having to come to Hamilton! Wow, that's a journey. Yeah, and "Winter" here is more like early Fall. :)
