Taupo

We pulled into Taupo at dusk and checked into our "campground" -- which resembled no campground I have ever seen in the States!  In New Zealand they are called Holiday Parks, and they are basically outdoor hotels.

We rented a cabin and were glad to stretch out and relax after a long day on the road.  The older three kids went swimming, but came back rather quickly complaining that there was a group of teens at the pool using disgusting language.  That was something we had been warned about...not that my kids have never heard swearing before, but it must have been pretty bad.  All part of the experience, I suppose.  We were proud of them for leaving when it became too uncomfortable.

We had a much better night's sleep, and woke refreshed on Sunday morning.  I snapped a few photos before we headed off to church.  I honestly don't mind roughing it with primitive services, but if this is what our camping arrangements will be like throughout our stay in New Zealand, no complaints from me!

This was the path leading to the restroom/shower area.  The bathroom was so spotless you could have eaten off the floor!

Here's Steve posing outside of the Holiday Park office.  Inside was a beautifully decorated welcome area, a little store, and a wifi station.

It felt wonderful to attend church in Taupo.  The members were friendly...a pretty even mix of Maori/Pacific islanders and caucasians.  We chatted with the missionaries, and the talks in Sacrament Meeting were excellent.  Just what we needed!

  1. Enjoy the camp grounds - but don't get too used to them.... the vault toilet specials await your return!

    1. Allison, thanks for all your comments! I think a vault toilet is another way to describe an outhouse?? We recently went camping together before leaving for NZ and the campground only had outhouses.
