Happy Birthday, Cameron!

Just as predicted, Cameron's 11th Birthday started out pretty soggy, but look at the smile on that "birt"day boy (the girls made the sign the night before, realizing too late their misspelling...we laughed about it all day).  Cameron certainly didn't mind, and really seemed to enjoy the unconventional little celebration we held for him in the back of Big Red.

The rain lightened up just in time for us to take down our tents.  On our way out of Russell, we stopped for a few photos of this beautiful church, the oldest in New Zealand:

Within a few hours of driving back toward Auckland, Mom mentioned that she would love to see glow worms, and wouldn't you know it?  No more than five minutes later, we saw a sign pointing to some glow worm caves.  We pulled off without a second thought!  The caves were family-owned with a small welcome hut, the sign on the door reading "Next Tour in 30 Minutes".  While we waited, the kids crossed over a stream and climbed up a wooden play set, while the rest of us quickly made lunch before our tour began.

We lined up outside the caves for a few photos:

Just as with our other glow worm experiences, we weren't allowed to take photos inside the caves, but we were so enchanted and impressed with these little caves full of sparkly glow worms.  I'm so glad that my mom was able to see them!  On the other side of the caves, we embarked on a beautiful nature walk leading back to the parking lot.

Beautiful!  We were so glad we took that detour!

After several more hours of driving, we were hungry and ready to stop.  We found a really great pizza place for dinner...

...and Cameron finished off the meal with a big piece of chocolate cake, his favorite!

Happy Birthday, Cameron!
