Our next night was spent here, at the Uretiti Camping Ground. We're not even sure how to pronounce it correctly, but we all just called it you're-a-titty -- and giggled every time.
After a little while, Cameron piped up and said, "I don't get it...what's so funny?" Oops.
Before we set up camp, we passed through Whangarei and stopped to see the gorgeous waterfalls:
So pretty! The falls are literally right off the main road in Whangarei -- a must-stop if you are in the area!
At the campground, we just chose a piece of grass and planted ourselves, similar to other basic camping locations we've visited across New Zealand. There weren't many guests sharing the campground on the night we stayed, but the host told us that over Christmas and New Year's there are hundreds of visitors and hardly a bare section of grass to be seen!
The campground host also gave us a gentle warning that this area was a known hot-spot for "naturist" campers (nudists). We never crossed paths with any of these so-called naturists, which was a bit of a let-down...what's the use of staying at a campground called Uretiti if you never get to actually see one? Geez.
After dinner, we walked the short path to the beach and were treated to another spectacular sunset:
